At this plant, quality control is a keyword. That's why they have been a top seller of trucks for years. Quality control goes right down to the process water used in the plant. They selected VAF to design and build a side stream filter system.
The problem was pipe scale that continued to come off the I.D. of existing pipe and plug small passages in the welding nozzle cooling tip.
This system is the closed loop welder water system. VAF took 1000gpm from a 12" main that handles 4,000gpm, increased the pressure to overcome loss thru the filter and re-injects the cleaned water back into the main. De-signed specifically to shoehorn into the plant's available space and piping configuration, the system includes a 15hp pump rated at 1000gpm at 20psi, an 8" model VAF 20008P/100HC automatic cleaning filter with VF4AC elec-tronic controller, and a fused disconnect, mag starter-all mounted with necessary valves and piping on a steel plat-form.
Installation was a snap. The customer had only to bring inlet/outlet piping to the system, run a 3" PVC pipe to drain and supply 460vac to the pump-motor starter. The system includes isolation valves so the filter can be taken off line for maintenance.
A 100 micron high capacity SS screen was first installed in the filter and operated for several weeks. Flushing frequency was quite high initially, but as the filter cleaned the system's towers and piping, time between flushes decreased. A 50 micron screen was then installed in the filter and the system has now stabilized with normal flushing frequency.
