WORKING PRINCIPLE
The amount of energy required to turn a moving column of water is used to
calculate a proportionate rate flow.
When a fluid is forced to change direction due to a bend in the conduit, the fluid exerts a reaction force on the walls of the conduit. The magnitude of this reaction force is proportional to the directional momentum change of the fluid (conservation of momentum). This is the same principle used to design a class of hydraulic turbines (Pelton) as well as designing thrust blocks for penstocks and pipe lines.
